Removable disks and Everything 1.5 Alpha

Post by menes »

Hello,

I have an external, removable disk (bitlock encrypted) that I use to make backups. Everytime I do a windows restart it's like I plug the disk. If everything is already running I have to force a rebuild. If I stop everything and run it again then the rebuild is automatically run. However due to attributes this rebuild costs time and CPU. Since the disk is the same, why every time a rebuild is needed? Can't its last known state saved in the index and then check for differences against this index?

Is it possible to add this behavior? Is there a setting I'm missing? I have the following settings in NTFS indexes:

[x] Automatically include new fixed volumes
[x] Automatically include new removable volumes
[ ] Automatically remove offline volumes

Local NTFS Volumes:
OS (C:)
DATA (D:)
My Passport (F:)

Settings for My Passport (F:)
[x] Include in Database
Include only: (it is left blank)
Maximum size: 1024 Kb
Allocation delta: 256 kb
[x] Enable USN Jurnal
[ ] Load USN journal to the Recent Changes database
[x] Monitoring Changes

I'm using the latest version (1.5.0.258a) (x64)

Thanks for the bug report menes,

It sounds like a bug...

Everything should remember your bitlocker drive with those settings.
Once it is unlocked, Everything should pickup new changes (may take up to one minute)
A reindex should not be occurring.
Everytime I do a windows restart it's like I plug the disk. If everything is already running I have to force a rebuild.
What happens to your Everything index after a restart?
Is Everything preventing you from unlocking the bitlocker drive?
Is the old bitlocker drive missing from your Everything index?
If I stop everything and run it again then the rebuild is automatically run.
After doing this, what is shown in Tools -> Debug -> Statistics -> Build -> Last rebuild reason?

Debug output might be helpful:
  • Make sure the bitlocker drive is locked.
  • In Everything, from the Tools menu, under the Debug submenu, click Start Debug logging.
  • Unlock your bitlocker drive.
  • In Everything, from the Tools menu, under the Debug submenu, click Stop Debug logging.
---this will open your Everything Debug Log.txt---
  • Could you please send this file to support@voidtools.com

Hello, I've just sent you an e-mail with the logs you've requested. After the reboot initially Everything didn't show the F: folder but I left it on its own devices and five minutes later F: appeared on the list of files without needing me to force a rebuild. I don't know if the old index was loaded and checked against the disk or a rebuild was made, I imagine that you can find the info in the logs I've sent you through e-mail.

Thank you for the debug logs menes,

Everything is forgetting the drive when the drive is locked.
The issue also occurs when automatically remove offline volumes is unchecked.

this issue is also related.

I am working on a fix.

Everything 1.5.0.1262a fixes an issue with Everything forgetting drives when it is unable to determine the file system format.

Could you please check if the issue occurs with this version?

Hello,

It seems to work. I took off the disk and while "F" was not depicted with drive icon everything was searchable. After inserting the disk and giving the password, F, though still shown as folder and not as disk, is searchable and browsable.

Unfortunatelly since I'm at work right now I can't post a screenshot since image sharing sites are blocked by policy.

This is really minor since except from the wrong icon all things work like expected and furthermore after some minutes the disc icon appears correctly.
