Searching USB memory stick

Post by terrypin »

I'm almost sure I've done this successfully before but if so I've lost the knack or the setting. I get no results when searching a USB (formatted FAT32) open in my PC which definitely contains files.

Since its FAT32, you'll need to use File Lists.

It is better to use the Folder Indexing this option has been created for indexing FAT32.

Thanks both.

So is it not possible to use plain vanilla searching for a USB drive?

Everything's native index mode requires a drive (even a USB drive) to be NTFS formatted.

Thanks for the prompt follow-up, understood. (I'd managed to confuse myself by trying another USB meanwhile and succeeding in searching it in native mode. Then realised it was NTFS.)

So for my FAT32 USB I'm now trying the File List method. I dragged G: from My Computer into the File List Editor. I see the USB's contents very much as they would appear in XP Explorer. Therefore I don't really follow how that helps me to find a particular file or files any faster than opening G: in Explorer? Yet the Help does say "You can search and sort file lists by size, date or attributes instantly." (my bold). I don't see a Search item in any of the menus within the File List Editor? I'm sure I'm misunderstanding some basic point here!

Also, I saved the list as an EFU file, thinking that was the route to success. But when I d-clicked that file in Exploter, Everything opened with an empty search box and an empty window. What should it have done?

@salazor: I haven't yet tried the Folder method.

Then try the method Folder - I have so FAT32 and USB drives in this way, you can update the list of items and using the "File List" is not, but choose that make you more fit.

Thanks salazor, just succesfully used that method.

But I was puzzled why it first re-scans all my regular internal and external hard drives (about 4 TB)? Why not scan just the newly added US stick (the 'folder')?

For searching a 32 GB stick, that makes the process very long-winded for the first search.
