Failure to update database, failure to find file

Post by Chas »

Everything is a GREAT tool --- most of the time.

Sometimes, after creating a new file with e.g. MS Word, the file will not show up on the Everything table for minutes, hours or even days. Same thing is true for a file revision.

This significantly limits the benefits of Everything. The only way out of this is to recreate the Everything index, which takes a many, many minutes for my 4+ million files. After I do this re-indexing, the "lost" files are in the table and I can continue my work.

Am I doing something wrong"? Is there a way to force Everything to update the database and table quickly?

I've tried to find a solution in the Everything tools and options and in the Everything forums. Tried a couple things, but nothing has fixed this problem.

Thanks for any ideas!

What file system? - If NTFS try:

Code: Select all

rc:today
You will have all of today's files - created, modified, rename, etc...

What version of Everything?
The drive in question is NTFS?
And your settings for Options | Indexes | NTFS ?
And this only happens every so often?

I'm using the current Everything version; checking says 'no updates available'. All my 4 drives are NTFS, one in case, three on USB.
System is Windows 7 Home Premium, all updates applied. 8 GB RAM. Fast AMD Vision quad processor. Bells and whistles.
The problem seems sporadic and unpredictable by anything I can see. I've tried setting the database and index to C: drive only; same problem.

Please try the Everything 1.4 beta.
The NTFS monitor in the Everything 1.4 beta is more robust than Everything 1.3.

When Everything 1.3 encounters an error monitoring an NTFS volume, the monitors stop completely, missing future changes to the volume.
Everything 1.4 will continue to try monitoring a NTFS volume after encountering an error.

If you wish to continue to use Everything 1.3, please run Everything in debug mode:
  • Completely exit Everything.
  • Open your %APPDATAP%\Everything\Everything.ini
  • Change the following line:

    Code: Select all

    debug=0
    to:

    Code: Select all

    debug=1
  • Save changes and restart Everything.
  • what is displayed in the debug console?

I updated to the 1.4 beta and am happy with the result. Indexing is much faster. Sorting is VERY much faster. And so far, the database seems to update as I work. Haven't lost a file yet!
Thanks for the help. :P
