Latest on Tag searching?

Post by reelismism »

I admit I could have read more, but all the info was making my head spin!

Was wondering if you could give some quick suggestions/links re: my use case:

I want to quickly search a large collection (>5tb) of personal footage videos that I want to tag and categorise.
I'd ideally like this data to be searchable by Everything (E), and ideally in metadata (understand this could slow down results, but looking for 2nd fastest option).

Planning to use a 3rd party tool to edit the Metadata of these files in Windows.

Any suggestions?

I currently have the next version of Everything displaying some meta data.
However, there is a lot more work to do, such as indexing this information and supporting meta data for file formats that Windows does not support.

Hopefully tagging support will be available in the next version of Everything.

I am making progress on searching, sorting and indexing meta data.

I'm having to implement my own readers for most common file formats, as Windows doesn't support this natively.
If Everything can not read meta data, it will fall back to using Windows properties..

Could you pls ELI5 in practical use (i.e. searching for tags on files) ;) ?
Also, how are the tags managed on files?

I think you will have to wait - just like the rest of us - until it's released.

(If I'm building/writing something after designing it, it often ends up 'completely' different due to practical limitations *)

* In my case: my limited skill set ;)

Hi. I would love to search tags and other metadata as well.

Searching, indexing and sorting by "tags" will be available in the next major release of Everything.

I still need to look into modifying tags from within Everything.
Everything will use the same tagging system as Windows. You will be able to override the windows tags with your own custom tags.

I am unfamiliar with Windows tagging. How does it work. Is it NTFS reliant?

It's up to the implementation.
Windows tags do not necessarily use NTFS/alternate streams. Usually tags are stored with the files data.
Not all files can have Windows tags.

For most files, tags are stored with the files data (eg: jpg/mp4/docx).

Folder tags can be set with a custom Desktop.ini

Custom "Everything tags" will be stored in external csv files.

I've just started playing with Kyno https://lesspain.software/kyno , it looks like it could be the solution I've been waiting for (organising a large video production content library), it produces metadata as you add it, to the folder containing the video files.

Thought I'd just enquire if:
- There's some way of parsing this metadata, as related to the files in question, i.e. search for #outdoor show those files in Everything?
OR
- If their method might provide insight for the method used by everything.

Any progress?

Thanks for the Kyno suggestion.
I will look into this.
My guess is they have their own database for metadata.
Any progress?
Still needs a lot of work.

Should have added prior, this is why I thought a good use-case, or possibly used in parralel with Everything:
The most valuable data - everything you add, like ratings, tags, text metadata (title, description, scene, shot etc.), markers, subclips - is stored in XML files in hidden directories located in the same directory as the media file they belong to. This makes it easy to share and move around folders while keeping all the metadata you added in Kyno intact.
