Offline Drive Setup

Hello,

Im new to Everything and would like to confirm some setup procedure for my use case before I start using it. Im using Windows 10 pc I7 16gb ram.

-Need several WD MyBook external drives indexed, to be then disconnected from pc to cold storage.

-Need saved drive indexes to be present in current pc search parameters without having to redo full pc reindex on connection/disconnection of external drives

-What is best way to index external drives? Use normal Everything search with particular settings, or use Everything File List (EFU) with some particular settings, Folder Indexing or something else?

There is mention of different ways/setings in the forum but very confusing to new user. Please advise specifically step by step the best way to accomplish this. If it helps I have used Cathy before which Im told Everything is similar but updated.

File lists are best for offline media that does not change.

To create a file list:

• In Everything, from the Tools menu, click File list editor....
• In the Everything File List Editor, from the Edit menu, click Add Folder....
• Select your drive and click OK.
• Adding an entire drive can take a few minutes.
• From the File menu, click Save as....
• Choose a filename and click Save.
• Close the Everything file list editor.

To add your file list to your Everything index:

• In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options....
• Click the File Lists tab on the left.
• Click Add....
• Select your file list from earlier and click Open.
• Click OK.

Alternatively, use folder indexing if you make changes to the offline drive often:

• In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options....
• Click the Folders tab on the left.
• Click Add....
• Select your drive and click OK.
• Click OK.

This drive will update at the next scheduled rescan time, or if you manually perform rescan:

• In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options....
• Click the Folders tab on the left.
• Select your drive and click Rescan Now.
• Click OK.

Extra suggestion:

Enable the File List Filename column in the resultlist.
If you give your EFU files a descriptive name, you will see that "E:\your file.jpg" comes from "Photos 2018-2019.efu", making it a lot easier to find on which disk this file is.

To enable the "File List Filename" column, right-click the Name header above the results and check File List Filename.
