C: not indexing

Post by klakster »

I have probably overlooked this, but it isn't for lack of trying. I want Everything to index all my drives. Often, it indexes my externals but doesn't index my main C: drive. I've been using several years, but this just started happening, and the program has become too valuable for me to work around it. And I'm old and stupid. Could you please give me directions in non-tech to cause the default search to all drives, including c:? Thank you.

Are you using the Everything Service or are you running Everything "As Administrator"?

Is C: NTFS?
Is it listed in Options | Indexes | NTFS?
Is it enabled in there?

Are you using Exclude list?
Is C: noted in there?

I am not sure WHAT it needs to look like or WHAT the parameters should be set to. Perhaps instead of the question marks, you could show me how those options must look to get the job done.

You got a lot of questions, because it is quite uncommon that your C:-drive isn't included.

Please follow these steps and answer the 5 questions:
  • Type
    C:
    in Everything's search bar
  • In the menu, select Search
  • Make sure only the Everything entry is enabled, like this:

    2020-05-27 23_51_43-Window.png (13.12 KiB) Viewed 3755 times
  • 1. Are any files or folders from your C:-drive shown?
  • In Everything's menu, choose Tools > Options
  • In the left pane, click on NTFS.
  • On the right side, in the Local NTFS volumes: box are your NTFS disks (we are in the NTFS department, after all :))
It should look similar to this:
    2020-05-27 23_31_44-Window.png
    2020-05-27 23_31_44-Window.png (17.21 KiB) Viewed 3755 times
  • 2. Is your C:-drive listed here?
  • If it is: select it by clicking on it
  • In the bottom half settings for your C:-drive are shown. 3. Is Include in database enabled for your C:-drive?
  • Now click on Exclude in the left pane.
  • 4. Are there any items listed in the Exclude folders: box?
  • Now click on General in the left pane.
  • Enable Everything service
  • Disable Run as administrator
  • Click the OK button
  • Type
    /restart
in the Everything search box and press ENTER
  • When Everything is starting again, keep an eye on the status bar to see if it is updating
  • When updating is done, type
    c:
    in the search bar
  • 5. Are any files or folders from your C:-drive shown?
EDIT: Added an extra screenshot

Everything will need administrative privileges to index your C: drive.
Administrative privileges are not required to index your external NTFS drives.
Everything might be running with limited privileges and Everything is unable to index your C: drive.

To index your C: drive you can either:
  • Use the Everything Service.
  • Run Everything as an administrator.
I recommend using the Everything Service:
  • In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the General tab on the left.
  • Check Store settings and data in %APPDATA%\Everything
  • Check Everything Service. (Please make sure this is tick-checked and not square-checked)
  • Uncheck Run as administrator.
  • Click OK.
  • Exit Everything (right click the Everything tray icon and click Exit).
  • Restart Everything.
