Why is Run as Administrator the default?

Post by froggie »

Just out of curiosity, why is Run as Administrator the default when using the installer? From all I read here, it seems clear that using the Service works best in almost all cases. For that matter, when would run as Administrator be needed?

The default is to install the Everything Service, unless:
  • Your OS is Windows XP or earlier.
  • The installer is run with an admin account
  • Run as admin was enabled in a previous installation.

Everything requires administrative privileges for low level read access to NTFS volumes.
To index NTFS volumes you will need to either:
  • Install the Everything Service (recommended)
  • Run Everything as administrator

Please try running the installer as a standard user.

You can change this setting at anytime:
  • In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the General tab on the left.
  • Check Store settings and data in %APPDATA%\Everything
  • Uncheck Run as administrator.
  • Check Everything Service. (Please make sure this is tick-checked and not square-checked)
  • Click OK.
  • Exit Everything (right click the Everything tray icon and click Exit).
  • Restart Everything.
