Listing a partial name w/an extension on the end (ie, .doc)

I could have sworn that a while back I could list

how to .doc

and it would return as one of the documents

How to read a book.doc

But if i put that in now, it doesn't come up. If i just list

how to

it does--along with all the other extension types (so more results than I want)

Am I forgetting something? Or, to ask another way, can this be done?

Do you have "Whole Word" (Search | Match Whole Word) enabled?

I don't. But perhaps I misunderstood what this was for--didn't know that would help. I'll try it!
Does beg another question--sometimes I also only remember part of the word, ie. sometimes I abbreviate a file name as "prod" for "products". If I do a whole word search, I'm assuming i can't do "prod .doc" to get "new products.doc"?

So is there anyway to do that scenario?

Oh! TO add one thing to the above. Doing "prod*.doc" doesn't return it either.

On my setup with Match Whole Word off.

a. Prod .doc returns all .doc items with prod in the name.
b. Prod* .doc returns all .doc items beginning with prod.
c. How to .doc returns all .doc with How to in the name
d. How* to .doc returns all .doc beginning with How To

Surprised this doesn't work for you. Maybe you lost your .doc files ...
