Difference between offline volume and folder?

Post by cabbage »

What's the difference between an offline volume and folder with a name like E:\ which is a whole drive? I think my problem with Everything showing multiple drives with the same letter, which I asked about in another thread , might be caused by two distinct issues: the drive letters themselves (addressed in that thread), and confusion about drives added as NTFS as opposed to Folders. If I start adding File Lists I feel it could get even more confused.

I am not sure I understand the question..

Internally, there's very little difference between a file/folder on an NTFS volume vs a file/folder on a folder index.
This makes it difficult to know which file/folder belongs to which volume when multiple volumes share the same drive letter.

Everything 1.4 is not aware of online/offline status for NTFS volumes or folder indexes.

Monitoring changes to NTFS volumes is more reliable than monitoring changes to folders.
Everything can miss changes to folders.

Are you seeing duplicated files/folder? -If so, please remove any NTFS volumes from your folder indexes under Tools -> Options -> Folders.

Everything 1.5 has a folder sidebar that can show volume labels.
Everything 1.5 has an index volume label column.

Everything 1.5 is aware of online/offline status for NTFS volumes or folder indexes.
A Online property is available in Everything.

Thanks. I haven't had a chance to dig into this as I am shuffling drive names around but it will be helpful.

I guess what I really meant to aks was, how should I index external hard drives that I only attach for a few minutes once a week or so in order to back up files - NTFS, ReFs, Folders or File Lists? Some are exFAT and some are NTFS. I don't know if it makes any difference but I don't ever run software on the drives or "actively" use the files on them. They're only for backups.

NTFS, ReFs, Folders or File Lists?
NTFS indexing for NTFS volumes. (Tools -> Options -> NTFS)
ReFS indexing for ReFS volumes. (Tools -> Options -> ReFS)
FAT indexing for FAT volumes (Everything 1.5 -> Tools -> Options -> FAT)
Folder indexing for other volumes. (Tools -> Options -> Folders)
