Can't open network file seach results

Post by Citizen Snips »

I am trying to use voidtools with mapped network drives. Although the files I search for appear in the results as expected, when I try to open any of them or their paths from within Everything, I get the following error:

Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item.

This occurs even if I run Everything search as administrator.

Note that the Path as displayed by Everything doesn't match the path shown in Windows Explorer for the same file. For example, if I have the following path in Windows Explorer:

Code: Select all

\\winfs1\users$\user1\My Documents\Excel Files\myfile.xlsx
the Path to the same file shows up in Everything search results as:

Code: Select all

C:\Windows\CSC\v2.0.6\namespace\winfs1\users$\user1\My Documents\Excel Files\
is there any way to fix this?

Make sure you are running Everything using the Windows login account as filemappings and accessibility are per-user:
  • Enable Everything Service
  • Disable Run as administrator
Both settings can be found under Menu:Tools > Options > General
  • Completely exit Everything (right-click the Everything systemtray icon and select Exit)
  • Start Everything
Now you can :
  • Go to Menu:Tools > Options > Indexes > Folders
  • Click the Add button.
  • In the Folder: field enter your sharename
  • Click the OK button
  • Done!

Thanks, the correct path now shows up in Everything search results, but the incorrect path also shows up (the C:\Windows\CSC\v2.0.6\namespace\winfs1\users$\user1\ ones). Is there any way to exclude the incorrect path so I don't have 2 search results for every matching file?

YEs, sure.
The c:\windows\csc\ path contain caches of off-line files (CSC = Client Side Cache).
If you want to permanently exclude them, you can do so under Menu:Tools > Options > Indexes > Exclude
(you can exclude the entire c:\windows\csc folder)
