PDF Preview

Post by capteelingurdian »

Hi,

Got lots of HUGE-ish PDF files.

I've noticed MOST of my other types of files will load up in the preview with no delay, or barely any delay. PDFs in preview are these days loading about just 20% of the time. (Even smaller PDFs as well.)

I've got a decent amount of RAM.

Is there any setting / switches I can throw to help the PDF previews to render more easily?

My default PDF viewer is a program called

PDF X-Change editor

And, it seems that this is what Everything is using (Explorer too, since it's the 'default' app, I'm guessing.)

Thanks!

One thing I notice - if I click on a VERY small file, like two pages - THEN switch to the bigger files, then the preview pane seems to "hold" the viewer open.

Is there any way to use some OTHER "viewer" for the preview other than my default viewer - which perhaps may not play too well with Everything? Is that a fix?

Thanks!

I also have the PDF X-Change Editor Plus (version 10.0.1 build 371) installed and configured as PDF previewer.
For me, there is no delay starting a preview.
Even a 10 MB PDF file with more than 300 pages is displayed in a second.
Also, no problem switching between PDFs in the results while preview is on.

You can test other PDF previewer, for example
- SumatraPD installed with the necessary options
- MS PowerToys contains a PDF previewer
- MS Edge also brings a PDF previewer

Hi,

Ah! Thanks. To test, what would I need to do? Choose another PDF app as default and then re-start?

Thanks!

And! This is the odd thing - just now it loads up files of...1,187 pages...in a second for me?

Is there some "flush" command for the preview window, perhaps - to get it to in some way re-start itself? I did restart the APP itself several times to no avail. Seems like the way I did get the PDF preview going again was by starting with a SMALL doc first? Not sure.

Thanks!

Toggling the preview pane (Alt + P) will unload the preview handler.

To unload the preview handler for each preview:
  • In Everything 1.5, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the Advanced tab on the left.
  • To the right of Show settings containing, search for:
    preview
  • Select preview_single_handler_instance.
  • Set the value to: true
  • Click OK.
