Searching file contents

Post by BigKetchup »

Is there a way to get the software to search inside files too?

I tried content:medical hoping to see some documents but it brought back nothing.

Everything uses the system iFilter to search file content.

Please make sure you are using the x64 version of Everything.

Please make sure Everything is installed correctly and running as a standard user:
  • In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the General tab on the left.
  • Check Store settings and data in %APPDATA%\Everything.
  • Uncheck Run as administrator.
  • Check Everything Service. (Please make sure this is tick-checked and not square-checked)
  • Click OK.
  • Exit Everything (right click the Everything tray icon and click Exit).
  • Restart Everything.

To search file content, please try the content: search function.

For example, to search for the content "To be or not to be" in docx files, modified this year, search for:
ext:docx dm:thisyear content:"To be or not to be"

Note: File content is not indexed. Searching file content will be very slow.
For the best performance, combine the content: search with other search filters.

Please try the Advanced Search under the search menu and set the "A word or phrase in the file" field.
For the best performance, set as many fields in the Advanced Search as possible.

Content search progress is shown in the status bar at the bottom of the Everything search window.

Please let me know if you still have any trouble searching content.

It didn't work. It shows filenames with "content" in it. I tried your steps and then looked up the following string:

content:"medical" and it only showed files that had the word "content" in it.

As another note, can the software look up contents in Google Drive? Right now I have it set to stream files so not sure if that changes it.

*Update: It's working. It seems to be working better on the Alpha release.
Is there a way to enable indexing in the Alpha? So it goes through the files once and has a database it can pull from.

I'll also say that it does work very slowly. Unless I'm wrong, I don't think Everything is the best program to use for this.
