ETP Server hangups

Post by nagan »

645b
1.I am trying to connect an XP and a Win 7 units. They work fine -both ends and list the files. But double clicking brings the spinning donut HANG -both ends. I have to close everything and restart.

2.Is there a way to specifically open another instance/WINDOW (ONLY FOR SERVER -UNIT FILES). When I connect to a server the files in the regular window seem to be overwritten or replaced. Am missing a trick somewhere.

3.Can a general warning that a User and password is yet to be keyed in (in case) be flashed , were a user to start the ETP server without them, for whatever it is worth?

4.Do I have to key in the user and password everytime I need to connect to a sever? Is there a list , or is there something which I should catch-up.

What link type are you using when connecting?

If you are using the default link type \\server\C: please make sure you share each drive by its drive letter.
If this is the case, this would cause this hang, because the \\server\C: share does not exist.
-or-
Change the link type to something else, eg: \\server\C$
2.Is there a way to specifically open another instance/WINDOW (ONLY FOR SERVER -UNIT FILES). When I connect to a server the files in the regular window seem to be overwritten or replaced. Am missing a trick somewhere.
The new window will Inherit the connection of the current window.
Please use the Disconnect option from the Tools menu.
I am considering an option to specify the 'home' page that will be used for new windows.
3.Can a general warning that a User and password is yet to be keyed in (in case) be flashed , were a user to start the ETP server without them, for whatever it is worth?
I am considering moving the Start ETP Server option to the options window to avoid accidental starting of the ETP server.
4.Do I have to key in the user and password everytime I need to connect to a sever? Is there a list , or is there something which I should catch-up.
Everything will only remember the last username, the password is not remembered by Everything.
You could use the command line option -connect to automate the connection.
I will also be adding ETP hosts to bookmarks in the next release.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Hi,
While connecting thru \\server\c$ , whenever I click on any file , I get the "You have no permsissions to access the file........" prompt. Even if it is in the legitimately shared folder. That is from Win7 looking into XP.
But ftp://host/c: works fine form both ends. Images and media files open up well.

The shared files open in explorer without issues , but not thru Everything -non ftp mode(no permissions). Has something more to be done to the variables. Since almost all the files images music shared/unshared open up thru the FTP mode , I wonder why it should not open up regularly thru everything. In the end it would be great if a file opens up with its default association.

Could you please give some more information on the error.
The shared files open in explorer without issues
Could you please give an example of the file's full path in Everything?
Eg:

Code: Select all

\\server\music\folder\song.mp3
Please send some debug output when trying to open these files.

OK. I just made 2 folders song1- shared , songs2 -Unshared and tried to access the files.
The order was first by 1. c: , then by 2. \\server\c$ and then finally by 3. ftp://host/c: Only the third works by opening the browser.
I think the address for option 2 is wrong , by forcing the drive name. In fact on right click , open path it takes to the My documents of the host. Can it be just SERVER*\\songs1 instead of SERVER*\E$\songs1.
The debug is attached..

No it does not. Straightaway I get the message from EXPLORER that the permission is delayed. Also the path (explore path) against the file name leads to the host " My documents" rather than the one in the remote system. By the way E is the drive name. Is "E$" the culprit? Can you elaborate on password.E?

Please ignore the E.

Suggestion... Can the db file (of the network computer) be cached and refreshed at every fixed intervals so that during scrolling thru the result there is no blank screen for a second till the results catch up from the network.

I tried connecting from XP to Win 7 (read the everything db in win 7 from XP) , and I found the following. The firewall log (presumably) in Win7 when it was accessed is attached.
Initially my firewall settings in Win7 is untrust other computers. Untrust is different from distrust which negatively disallows any connection.

1.ftp://host/c:
I am able to connect and open all the files thru Firefox browser (compatible files are opened or an alert to download is provided). And also the respective folder is accessed.

2.\\Server\C$ Firewall mode untrust
Able to connect and read the db . But when an attempt to open the file is done it hangs. I have to terminate everything and restart. The firewall log perhaps when it blocks the connection.

3.\\Server\C$ Firewall mode trust.
Able to connect the db. Also able to open the files with their respective associated app. The firewall log attached.

I wonder if so much play of ports are involved in this...

When I attempt to connect XP from Win 7 in the FTP mode it works , but does not allow to explore. In the c$ mode it always throws the WIndows file access not allowed error when tried to open any file.

The visible items are cached.
However, I will consider caching a few extra items outside the visible region to improve scrolling performance.

Thanks for the suggestion.

ETP uses two ports:
21 is for the control port.
A random port is used for data.

Ok. One issue of seeing Win7 db in XP is solved with trusting a system or operating with no firewall at all. But are you able to ascertain why the reverse (opening XP files in Win 7 system or explore)is not working in the \\Server\C$ mode. I checked with the Firewall closed in both the systems. I always get the explorer error when tried to view even shared files of XP from Win7.

You might need to enable admin shares on Windows 7, please try:

Allow me to come over this one more time. I went thru the link and it has some suggestions for Win 7 OS , which of course is ok for me. I am able to access all the files in my Win 7 system from the Xp unit as I mentioned , absolutely no issues here. But what bugs me is that from my Win 7 unit all the files in XP are accessible thru a browser via FTP. So it does mean that those are being shared. I get the explorer error only when approached thru the explorer mode.
I wonder if anyone shares this problem.Seems strange, as within XP both the explorer/FTP share works quiet well for the host. Not quiet sure why the sharing is permitted in FTP but not thru explorer (even for shared files) :o

EDIT Ok this time I decided to directly key in the address from the explorer bar. I keyed
\\win7\c$ in my XP system and bang it opens. Similarly for other drives or folders.

Again I key \\XP\C$ from my win 7 unit , I get the password prompt. Even though the password is correct , I get the Windows , not accessible prompt.

Next I enter address \\XP\C$\share1 which is rejected similarly but \\xp\share1 is accepted , the folder name and display name is same. That is the reason why even shared folders are inaccessible even whilst clicking from everything , because it lists the full address rather than the share name.

That seems to be the essential difference between the two OS and if my guess is right everything would not work for accessing XP systems. I would like to be corrected.

Just as is done for ftp , can the pivotal control be retained by everything itself and it opens a channel to relay info/data transfer amongst itself rather than pass control to explorer?

Can you consider something like a file browser/explorer even rudimentary like that of 7zip or WinRAR. Clicking a file to open you can stream the content anyway to open up by the associated application. Only function of an explorer needs to be mimicked if a folder is clicked. It seems FTP server is more in control and can be emulated here , if the explorer related ETP connection does not come thru because of apparent Windows limitations.

I believe 7zip / winrar / winzip extract the files to a temporary location to work with them.

This is something I would rather avoid since I don't want to copy a 8gb file when really I just want to steam it.

I would have to implement my own shell namespace to accomplish this, which would be a huge job, maybe something for a future release of Everything.

In fact it is a simple file browser that can recursively go down/up. It has nothing to do with extracting files...

I have thought about adding a tree view to Everything to make it feel more Explorer-like / easier to browse...

Even a simple list for a current directory as you suggested could work well.

I will consider these features for a future release.

Thanks for the suggestions.
