Newest version gives me nothing but a blank page!

Post by lucystt »

I just downloaded Version 1.3.0.632b and it doesn't seem to be working at all. The earlier version I had worked fine and I loved it, but I wanted to be able to search on my external backup drive. A post on the support page implied that this is only possible with 1.3 -- but something is obviously wrong.
I'm not new to computers, but I do have gaps in my knowledge, so I'm probably missing something and need someone to hold my hand through this! I've checked the settings in the tools options but nothing is obvious to me (except that there are more options than there used to be!). Help!!!

This problem occurs if you run Everything with a normal user account.

Please run Everything as administrator.

-or-

Please try Everything 1.3.0.636b or later and install the Everything service.

There was no option to run as administrator that I could find in the menu options, so I re-downloaded version 1.3.1.636b (at http://www.voidtools.com/Everything-1.3.1.636b.exe) and checked the "install Everything service" box. It took it a while, but finally all my files loaded into the window, including the external drives. So thanks very much.

But where would I find that "run as administrator" option, just for future reference? :?

Also, if I leave Everything running while the computer is on, how much RAM does it take up? Would that slow me down significantly?

To run Everything as an administrator:
  • Right an Everything shortcut and click Properties.
  • Click the Compatibility tab.
  • Check Run as administrator.
  • Click OK.
if I leave Everything running while the computer is on, how much RAM does it take up?
Everything does not use much RAM or CPU usage.
You can check how much RAM and CPU Everything is using with the Task Manager.

To open Task Manager:
  • Press Ctrl + Shift + ESC.
  • Click the Processes tab and locate Everything.
To open Task Manager on Windows 8:
  • Press Ctrl + Shift + ESC.
  • Click More details.
  • Click the Details tab and locate Everything.
If you have the service installed there will be two processes.
The service process is running under the system account.
The client process will run under your user account.

The service process should only use 1MB ram, and little to none CPU usage.
The client process should use <10MB for about 100,000 files.
Would that slow me down significantly?
Everything may take a few seconds to load it's database on system start-up. (about 1 second for 100,000 files)
Everything monitors file system changes in the background, this should have little to no change in system performance.
Sorting by size or date can affect performance.
Search for file sizes and file dates can affect performance.
Certain queries can affect performance. (eg: regex, complex wildcards)
