I'm not sure but it seems that since changing to version 1.4.0.717b (x64) Everything is having to rebuild more frequently. IOW, I'll open it to make a search and it will first have to rebuild the index. When is it supposed to update the index? Does it do so in the background? If so, why this rebuilding behaviour please? Perhaps I've made an incorrect setting?

When is index updated?
Re: When is index updated?
Everything will update its index in real-time when it is running. When is it supposed to update the index? Does it do so in the background?
The USN Change Journal will continue to monitor changes while Everything is not running.
The USN Change Journal usually has a buffer with the maximum size of 64MB.
If your USN Change Journals are smaller, try increasing them to 64MB:
- In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
- Click the NTFS tab.
- For each NTFS volume:
- Change Maximum Size to:
65536 KB
- Change Maximum Size to:
- Click OK.
Everything should never do a full rescan, unless there is an issue with the database on disk.
Please make sure Everything is able to save and load the database from disk:
- In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
- Click the General tab.
- Check Store settings and data in %APPDATA%\Everything.
- Click OK.
- Completely exit Everything (Right click the Everything tray icon and click Exit)
- Start Everything with the -debug command line option:
Everything.exe -debug - What is displayed in the debug console after Everything has shown its first results?
Re: When is index updated?
Thanks. Have completed both of those suggestions and will follow-up if it re-occurs.

Re: When is index updated?
This is now happening on almost every search!
I made sure the settings suggested earlier were correct, but no success.
I've run in debug mode and sent the result by email.

Re: When is index updated?
I have the same problem the database isn't update after changes.
Service is running with no problems and USN Journal is set.
Version is 1.4.1.727b (x64)
Force rebuild helps.
I have send the debug output to support@voidtools.com.

Re: When is index updated?
Thanks for the debug output.
Can confirm, the Everything service is not correctly monitoring changes to NTFS volumes with 1.4.1.
I'm working on a fix.

Re: When is index updated?
Everything 1.4 will stop monitoring changes if the USN Journal ID changes. This is a bug.Can confirm, the Everything service is not correctly monitoring changes to NTFS volumes with 1.4.1.
I'm working on a fix.
The next beta update should fix the issue, if you would like to test this now, please try Everything 1.4.1.731b:

Still the same problem for me !void wrote:Everything 1.4 will stop monitoring changes if the USN Journal ID changes. This is a bug.Can confirm, the Everything service is not correctly monitoring changes to NTFS volumes with 1.4.1.

Only Force Rebuild helps
Using Folders works without problems and detects all changes with no delay
Re: When is index updated?
The next time this occurs, what happens if you open Tools -> Option -> NTFS? is it displayed within a couple seconds or does it take a minute?

Keenly looking forward to a fix, so hope you're successful.void wrote:Everything 1.4 will stop monitoring changes if the USN Journal ID changes. This is a bug.Can confirm, the Everything service is not correctly monitoring changes to NTFS volumes with 1.4.1.

After your last reply to me I found that the Everything service was running OK.
FWIW, while the problem is intermittent it seems almost certain to occur on first use in the morning (although I keep my i7 PC running 24/7, apart from deliberate restarts). It arose first thing today (the usual long wait while 'Updating database'). Service is set to 'Automatic'.
Will try your suggestion on next occurrence to '...open Tools -> Option -> NTFS' and report back.
Won't try the beta for the time being in view of report from horst.epp that it didn't solve the problem. These intermittent quirks are always a pain to isolate!
