How do I get previous search?

Post by nutnutwin »

Really sorry if it is answered already, but my search got nothing...

# What I am trying to do

I type 「abc」 press enter to run 「abc1.txt」

next time I activate Everything I try to reuse the previous search 「abc」, but found no shortcut/menu item for this

# What I expected
in search, press 「Up」 or some other shortcuts to bring up previous search

# What I did as research
- I read some documents but found nothing
- I went to Options➤Keyboard➤Search Edit | Show Search History
not exactly what I want, and also it does not show anything when I press the shortcut
eg. I set it to Ctrl+「.」

Thank you.

Please try enabling search history:
  • In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the History tab on the left.
  • Check Enable Search History.
  • Click OK.

To add a search to your search history:
  • Press ENTER from the search box.
    -or-
  • Perform an action on a result.

To recall previous searches:
  • From the search box, press Alt + Up or Alt + Down.
    -or-
  • Click the drop down box button on the right of the search box.

To auto-complete a search from your previous searches:
  • In the Search box, type in a partial search, for example: a
  • Press Ctrl + Space.
  • As an example, everything will auto-complete the search to: abc1.txt or give you options to pick from.

Thank you for your detailed advice

yes history is off

It would be really nice to show just the previous search string
, rather than the history though, as it would take extra step to pick it from list

I know I am asking too much, and really appreciate your answer

Please try Alt + Left to go back to the previous search.

Alt + Right to go forward.

The mouse back/forward buttons should work too.

Thank you for your reply
I tried both Alt+Left/Right and Mouse Forward/Backward and it does not seem to work

# What I tried
- In option make sure history is on
- Check View/Go To/View histor
And there are several records
- Check View/Go To/Back, Forward
and they are grey out
- Tried to find grey out reason but no results

Thank you.

"Navigation history" (alt+left/alt+right) is cleared when you close Everything.

Press ENTER from the search box or perform an action on a result to add the current search to your Navigation history.

Please consider setting your home search to the previous search:
  • In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the Home tab on the left.
  • Change Search to: (Use last value)
  • Click OK.
The next time you show an Everything window, the previous search is restored.
